Long Live the Book?

It's "Fall Cleaning" time! All you at-home moms know what I mean. The kids are back at school and so they can't stop you from clearing out the "junk" from their drawers, closests, and - if you dare - under their beds. The clearing out of our bookshelves comes at a good time given that my son's preschool teacher just asked for book donations for their recently added classroom. In my clearing out, I came across a book that I mentioned to a friend. Yesterday, I put it in an envelope and shipped it…See More

Yes, the tactile experience you can't duplicate reading books online. My new solution to the book accummulation is to donate them to the local public library, who resell them at the monthly book sale to benefit the library for a tax deduction.…

I just received news of my lower priced option - Livio Radio - more reasonably priced at $149.99! I'm curious to search out some reviews....

I have wanted to use these too but agree that something about a book, the tactile experience maybe, would be missing and reduce the reading experience. I guess I will have to try it out and see, they are certainly more environmentally friendly.

Mary Pat commented on Kirsten's blog post 'Cutting the Cable Cord... But Not Just Yet'
Ironically, I would very happily "cut the cord" - although I will confess that I too would miss Divine Design. I watch very little TV and would by far prefer to spend the time sharing dessert at the Cheesecake Factory with a good friend or…

Pandora Wish List

My name is MaryPat and I am a Pandora adict! There! I said it! If Pandora gave me a dollar for evey person I've directed to try Pandora, my four kids would have a pretty hefty start toward their college funds. My best introduction was to my college senior sister - who I believed knew all things web-related. Now she too is hooked - perhaps it's in the genes. That being said, the limitation is that Pandora is not as readily accessible as I would like (to my knowledge). If I am in front of my…See More

I have an IPod but was recenlty dismayed to learn that it would not support the downloadable audio books that my public library made available. (Here's a tip for you busy moms out there who love to read but don't have time - I do all of my…

Ellen Bonner commented on Mary Pat's blog post 'Family-Friendly Technology NEEDED!'
That in itself would be a good marketing advertisement "Family Freindly Technology". If I were looking at eight (though there are dozens) choices for a new phone for one of my teenagers and one was marketed as "Parent Approved Content…

Mary Pat commented on Mary Pat's blog post 'Family-Friendly Technology NEEDED!'
I suppose that I would like to see tech vendors provide some sort of filter or a parental locking system. For example, DirectTV and our computer offer systems that require a parental code to be entered in order to access certain content.…

Family-Friendly Technology NEEDED!

I agree with Ellen Bonner's posting that requests more E rated Playstation games. In addition to that, all those responsible for getting any kind of technology into the hands of consumers need to be more sensitive to those of us who do not wish to expose our young children to the excess of sexuality and violence that our culture has become immune to.A couple of years ago, I got a new cell phone from Verizon. It took a very short amount of time for my then 7-year old to discover the "Guy Stuff"…See More

Bluetooth for Moms

Although my cell phone of 2+ years has always had Bluetooth capacity, I just experienced the wonders of it for the first time. I will confess that this revelation occurred in my husband's new Bluetooth equiped car. And, as long as I am being honest, I will say that he took the responsibility for getting my cell phone in sync with the car's system (but he did say that it was easily done). Off I went on my "mom errands" with the luxury of hands free phone usage. To those of you in the business… Continue

Dog-Walking Tehnology Surpassing Home Technology?

It appears to me that dog-walking technology has surpassed home technology. I say this as I look around my kitchen and see electrical cords bunched up in rubber bands. I am someone who can devour home décor magazines and I love HGTV (my one and only television vice). I never see electrical cords bunched up with rubber bands in these pristinely designed settings. Now, I’ll be the first to say that I have some…

NFL Kicker! iPhone game gets you ready for the Super Bowl (Appolicious)

Appolicious - NFL Kicker! is the sort of game you download innocently enough looking to kill a few spare minutes; then, by the time you finally look up, you’ve spent half an hour devoted to kicking digital field goals. Four of the Strangest New Video Game Controllers (ContributorNetwork)

ContributorNetwork - Back when home video games were still new, every new console's controller was an experiment. Like the Fairchild Channel F's hybrid paddle-joystick, or the Mattel Intellivision's disc-and-touchpad arrangement.
