Long Live the Book?

It's "Fall Cleaning" time! All you at-home moms know what I mean. The kids are back at school and so they can't stop you from clearing out the "junk" from their drawers, closests, and - if you dare - under their beds. The clearing out of our bookshelves comes at a good time given that my son's preschool teacher just asked for book donations for their recently added classroom. In my clearing out, I came across a book that I mentioned to a friend. Yesterday, I put it in an envelope and shipped it…See More

"Yes, the tactile experience you can't duplicate reading books online. My new solution to the book accummulation is to donate them to the local public library, who resell them at the monthly book sale to benefit the library for a tax deduction.…"

Michael Whalen commented on Mary Pat's blog post Long Live the Book?
"I have wanted to use these too but agree that something about a book, the tactile experience maybe, would be missing and reduce the reading experience. I guess I will have to try it out and see, they are certainly more environmentally friendly."

Pandora Wish List

My name is MaryPat and I am a Pandora adict! There! I said it! If Pandora gave me a dollar for evey person I've directed to try Pandora, my four kids would have a pretty hefty start toward their college funds. My best introduction was to my college senior sister - who I believed knew all things web-related. Now she too is hooked - perhaps it's in the genes. That being said, the limitation is that Pandora is not as readily accessible as I would like (to my knowledge). If I am in front of my…See More

Family-Friendly Technology NEEDED!

I agree with Ellen Bonner's posting that requests more E rated Playstation games. In addition to that, all those responsible for getting any kind of technology into the hands of consumers need to be more sensitive to those of us who do not wish to expose our young children to the excess of sexuality and violence that our culture has become immune to.A couple of years ago, I got a new cell phone from Verizon. It took a very short amount of time for my then 7-year old to discover the "Guy Stuff"…See More

Bluetooth for Moms

Although my cell phone of 2+ years has always had Bluetooth capacity, I just experienced the wonders of it for the first time. I will confess that this revelation occurred in my husband's new Bluetooth equiped car. And, as long as I am being honest, I will say that he took the responsibility for getting my cell phone in sync with the car's system (but he did say that it was easily done). Off I went on my "mom errands" with the luxury of hands free phone usage. To those of you in the business… Continue

Dog-Walking Tehnology Surpassing Home Technology?

It appears to me that dog-walking technology has surpassed home technology. I say this as I look around my kitchen and see electrical cords bunched up in rubber bands. I am someone who can devour home décor magazines and I love HGTV (my one and only television vice). I never see electrical cords bunched up with rubber bands in these pristinely designed settings. Now, I’ll be the first to say that I have some…

Teens Are This Excited About Yahoo! Buying Tumblr

Now that Tumblr is a Yahoo! property, just like the beleaguered Flickr, some are predicting the service's death already and the deal hasn't even been officially announced yet. Those people are dramatic teens who use Tumblr but that's still a pretty big deal.

New Xbox more than a game console for Microsoft

Visitors play with Microsoft's Xbox 360 consoles at the Tokyo Game Show in Chiba By Malathi Nayak and Bill Rigby SAN FRANCISCO/SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp is set to make a splash this week with the eagerly awaited unveiling of its new Xbox game console, eight years after the last version, as it seeks a larger share of the $65 billion a year global computer gaming industry. But the small device faces some big competition from the PlayStation 4 by Sony Corp and the Wii U by Nintendo Co Ltd in a shifting market. ...

Google's wearable Glass gadget: cool or creepy?

File photo of Google founder Sergey Brin posing for a portrait wearing Google Glass during New York Fashion Week By Alexei Oreskovic SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google staged four discussions expounding on the finer points of its "Glass" wearable computer during this week's developer conference. Missing from the agenda, however, was a session on etiquette when using the recording-capable gadget, which some attendees faithfully wore everywhere - including to the crowded bathrooms. Google Glass, a cross between a mobile computer and eyeglasses that can both record video and surf the Internet, is now available to a select few but is already among the year's most buzz-worthy new gadgets. ...

EU Trade Commissioner Karel de Gucht stands for a portrait while visiting Reuters in New York By Daniel Bases NEW YORK (Reuters) - Europe's top trade official for the first time late on Friday officially cited Chinese mobile telecommunications equipment makers Huawei and ZTE Corp for violating anti-dumping and anti-subsidy guidelines. European Union Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said he was prepared to launch a formal investigation into anti-competitive behavior by these Chinese companies in order to protect a "strategic" sector of Europe's economy. ...

How the mighty have fallen: Nokia’s struggles, put in perspective

In one point in time, Nokia was the top-selling smartphone vendor in the world by a wide margin. It wasn’t even that long ago, in fact. But when Nokia failed to respond quickly enough to the industry’s shift toward touch, the Finnish giant lost its footing and toppled spectacularly. Just how bad have things gotten for Nokia? Market share numbers paint a pretty frightening picture, but a single tweet from Benedict Evans of Enders Analysis might do an even better job of putting things in perspective. In the past two years since Nokia announced that it was switching to Windows Phone as its mobile platform of choice, the vendor has sold just over 20 million Lumia phones. During the same period

Yahoo to vote on $1.1 billion Tumblr buy: AllThingsD

A Yahoo logo is pictured in Rolle SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc's board will meet on Sunday to vote on whether to offer $1.1 billion in cash for New York-based blogging service Tumblr, tech blog AllThingsD cited sources close to the situation as saying on Friday. Such an acquisition would be CEO Marissa Mayer's largest deal since taking the helm of the once-iconic Internet company in July 2012. Yahoo is keen on Tumblr because its younger user base would enhance the older website's "cool factor," the technology blog cited the sources as saying. The news could be announced as soon as Monday, it said. ...
