As time evolves, so does the functionality of certain objects. The television started out simply to enable us to watch programs, but has evolved to being able to use the Internet and play video games, among other things. Gaming systems were plain and simple, but now have evolved into allowing us to watch movies, stream the Internet, download photos, and download apps. The device that has gone through the most change, however, is the mobile phone. It started out as basic as can be, just for…Continue

As an avid TV watcher, I know and understand the pains of cable TV. Shows generally air once a week, cliffhangers and teases are everywhere, and timings often conflict with our own schedules. The couch and TV is one area of my life which I do not get to go to as much as I used to, simply because of a busy schedule. Trying to balance work, school, family, and friends prevents more time to be given to casually couch crashing and TV surfing as I would when I was younger. But, like many other…Continue

In the world today, the Indian population is on the rise in the United States. More and more citizens are migrating over to the States in order to pursue better opportunities for themselves. Indeed, parents often come here in order to raise their child in our elite academic system, which is renowned worldwide and has given birth to some of the greatest minds in history. But in coming to a whole new world, those Indians lose much of their former culture. Food, lifestyle, environment, daily…Continue

My daughter's friend was over the other day talking about her favorite shows and my daughter had no idea what she was talking about. It was then that I realized that my kids have already cut the cord from channel surfing the major channels. For about 3 years now, the majority of our content comes from Netflix, with a bit more from Amazon, Hulu, and YouTube, or directly from ABC.com, etc.
My kids have been mostly raised on documentaries and movies. My sons love "Famous Tank Battles"…Continue

Why can’t I use these speakers to play music from my computer?
I’m sitting in my room at my parent’s house, watching the NBA playoffs on TV. Above my TV, I have 2 fairly large speakers that are hooked up to a relatively old stereo. The idea: convert these 2 unused speakers into wireless speakers that I can use from my computer.
After doing a little research on wireless speakers I was not impressed. Most of the conversation is focused on surround sound or home…

The legacy pay-TV services market can now be divided into two distinct groups. First, those regions where the market is fully saturated and customer churn is the primary activity. Second, the developing nations where local pay-TV providers can still find new customers willing and able to pay for their offerings.
According to the latest market study by ABI Research, the global pay-TV market added nearly 47 million new customers in 2012 -- reaching a total of 864 million…

Everything today is in context. You can't read a news story, talk to a neighbor, watch a sporting event, or plan a vacation without understanding context. Who you are. Where you want to go. Your habits. Your friends and family. Finances. You name it.
So it is no surprise that advertisers for a long time have figured out that understanding the context of their target audience is worth more to them that just a static list of names and addresses. And in today's mobile world,…Continue

It is becoming increasingly clear that the flood gates for OTT video—that is TV and movie programming over a broadband Internet connection—have opened and are forcing traditional television service providers and movie studios to build profit tributaries off this rolling river or risk having many of their paying subscribers swept away. The industry is determined not to remake the mistakes of their brethren in the music business and is therefore trying to be proactive. The most promising of…Continue

While my dear sweet wife Kirsten seems to be hedging on giving up on our Pay TV service from Comcast, I am doing one last reflection on over-the-top (OTT) video content before we jump into evaluating our hardware options. My focus for this week is a pretty big one and one of the key areas of concern in switching to an Internet-based TV watching… Continue
