MoCA Podcast: When Will "MoCA Inside" Rule the Day?

Today we chatted with Rob Gelphman, Chairman of the Marketing Work Group for the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA). As we discuss various ways to distribute multimedia around our homes, MoCA stands out as one of the most comprehensive methods.

A Trip Planned with an iPhone

In December, my family of four headed out on a spontaneous two week road trip from Arizona to Washington. We packed the mini-van, strapped our two young daughters in their car seats, and hit the pavement to California. We had little plans, no overnight arrangements besides the first night in L.A., and limited funds.

But what we did have was two trusty iPhones at our sides. For two weeks, we tapped buttons on our phones that helped us navigate the Pacific Coast Highway (Maps app),… Continue

iGo Vs. Powermat: Gadget Accessories Good, Bad, and Ugly (Part 1)

As I said before, I try to be positive and open-minded when it comes to new technology. Not only are peoples’ livelihoods at stake, but we should realize that for every good tech product or service that makes it into our homes, 10 others tried and failed. But I am also cognizant of the fact that at Trender Research we focus on not just nerd-food, but tech devices and services that have a good chance of becoming mainstream— that is, they hit a sweet… Continue

Ode to the iPhone

I didn't get it at first. I was resistant, a near luddite.

I ribbed him for purchasing an iPhone as soon as it came out. The phone appeared to be superglued to his palm for a month. On occasion, I'd peer over during dinner and spy a game of poker going down. I'd grimace, he'd smile, and we'd finish our spaghetti. I sat on our couches, trying not to be embarrassed as I flipped open my mangled hot pink Motorola Razr and mashed the keys to text.

I ribbed him again for… Continue

Bluetooth for Moms

Although my cell phone of 2+ years has always had Bluetooth capacity, I just experienced the wonders of it for the first time. I will confess that this revelation occurred in my husband's new Bluetooth equiped car. And, as long as I am being honest, I will say that he took the responsibility for getting my cell phone in sync with the car's system (but he did say that it was easily done). Off I went on my "mom errands" with the luxury of hands free phone usage. To those of you in the business… Continue

Feedback Wanted: Whole-House Internet Video, Audio, and Telephony Solutions

There is no doubt that Internet-based services have transformed our worlds of entertainment and commmunications especially in the last 10 years. Many folks have come to rely on voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) solutions from providers such as Vonage and cable companies like Comcast. iTunes and digital music have become the mainstream, and new digital audio streamers such as Sonos have grown… Continue

Internet Video/Audio/Telephony Part One: Problem Statement

OK. Here is the first part of the analysis of the evolving "connected home" market. First task in understanding any new trend is defining the problem statement. I will start with Internet video since that is perhaps the most dynamic of the three.

Internet Video

People like to watch TV. A lot of TV. Ever since the big black and white piece of furniture arrived in the home people were hooked. Families gathered around. To be informed, entertained, made to feel… Continue

BlackBerry Storm Detailed Review: Awesome and Awful

Updated on March 17, 2009 (I guess I feel lucky). Below is my updated BlackBerry Storm review. Most of my review has become more positive, but a few areas are still weak or worse. My new title should be "More Awesome Than Awful".

As I promised, I have now had a chance to set up and use my new BlackBerry Storm for a couple of weeks. Since one of my pet peeves is reviews that don’t go beyond the challenges of the initial box-opening… Continue
