Video Game Industry and In-Game Advertising: Is There a Happy Medium?

I can respect the gaming purists out there who believe that in-game advertising is ruining some games with their injection directly inside the games themselves. With forecasts for in-game advertising expenditures as high as $1 billion by 2010, it appears the gaming industry has little choice but to accept its fate same as most other digital content creation and delivery means whose continuing existence can be owed to being ad-supported. Some of Sony’s… Continue

Social Networks and Gaming: Who is Going to Catch and Overtake Zynga?

It isn’t enough to feel like a neophyte and a need to catch up with the rest of the social networkers and their religious use of social media, but to now learn that the most played social network games and gaming company out there is a name that I did not recognize immediately – Zynga. Not only did I not recognize their name, but didn’t know that they are eclipsing 10 million daily users across their portfolio of… Continue

Gaming and Advertising: MTV Networks and the Interactive Advertising Bureau Take it to the Next Level

There now is recognition that people of all ages and demographics are gamers, but what is also true is the games people play are more and more digital and online. If there is consensus on these two facts and trends, then it was only a matter of time that advertisers would take the movement to online seriously. What they also are taking seriously is the effectiveness of their chosen ad format, and the extent… Continue

Computer downloaded games

I have put myself in a pickle. In my home there is no tv, computer, or internet usage(outside of school work) for my children until the weekends. Okay, maybe we make American Idol an exception. My two teenage boys are like all other teenage boys, game junkies, when allowed to play, after 3pm on the weekends. I purchased the Spore computer game for my 13 year old. It is perfect for a creative kid who isn't into the racing type games. I wanted to put the game on one of our non-internet computers… Continue

Network or "Cloud Computing" Gaming: Should MS, Sony and Nintendo be Worried?

There is a new Online Gaming company that is eliminating the console in the home and replacing it with a hub product they call a "MicroConsole". The company is "OnLive", and its capabilities appear to be targeted at diehard Gamers with the majority of investments placed in the games themselves rather than the consoles that have been fairly high-priced to date. The primary value proposition is eliminating the up-front purchase of pricey consoles, and… Continue

Are the New Gaming Systems Worth The Money?

The new gaming systems have been blowing my mind. Everything is so real! I don’t play video games that often and even though these new systems are incredible I have never thought that it would be worth the expense and I will just stick with my Madden on PS2. I dare anyone to try to convince me that it is worth spending half a grand on a new system. I have played some games on the new Xbox and I have to admit it is fun. However, I think I will just mooch of my friends’ gaming systems instead of… Continue

Nintendo Wii - Is it any better than the traditional video game systems??

Against my better judgement (and without my knowledge) our family recently got a Nintendo Wii. It was a famiy Christmas gift from my mother-in-law...need I say more?? We have let our 4 kids have almost no video game exposure until now. They are ages 10,6,3 and 8 mths. I have always been especially worried about our boys becoming obsessed with video games because I know how addicting they can be. I also felt like once they were in the house it would be too hard to impose limits restricting when… Continue

Wii Fit -- the downside

Santa brought us a Wii system this year and I quickly added the Wii Fit board and game. I have visions of skipping my gym membership and instead working out in the comfort of my own home. The system is very cool and its amazing how it can evaluate your balance and strength. The program/game has lots of options but it takes a while to go through a set of exercises. For example if I do 4 yoga poses and 3 strength moves it can take close to an hour but only bank 16-18 minutes on my workout timer.… Continue

OTT Video Adventures Part 5: Cutting the Cable Cord on Pay TV Sports and News

While my dear sweet wife Kirsten seems to be hedging on giving up on our Pay TV service from Comcast, I am doing one last reflection on over-the-top (OTT) video content before we jump into evaluating our hardware options. My focus for this week is a pretty big one and one of the key areas of concern in switching to an Internet-based TV watching… Continue

Games, Games, and More Games

I want more E (everyone)Rated Games for my kids. I wish our Playstation could prohibit the use of M(mature) games, much like you can do on your television. I think some parents hold out on getting these gaming boxes because most of what is out there is too violent or sexual. It's frustrating.

Xbox Continues to Conquer: OTT Video Trojan Horse Captures 20 Million Subscribers Via Xbox Live

Microsoft announced yesterday that sales of its Xbox 360 console have passed the 30 million mark globally, with its Xbox LIVE community growing to more than 20 million active members. With sales up 28 percent from last year, Xbox is so far showing the highest rate of growth in 2009 among the gaming consoles. Teenagers like me prefer Comcast for variety of content, Netflix for accessibility from any device.

Being a teenager, I've had the opportunity to experience watching TV using different sources, and also to observe my fellow teenage friends consuming TV. Here are my insights on teenage TV consumption to increase the TV hours of the teenage demographic.

My friends usually watch about one and a half to two and a half hours of…

Nintendo DS

I have always been a fan of Nintendo products and have my own personal experiences. For you parents out there, having a portable game system that kids can recharge(batteries), was an ingenious idea. The DS is light and very easy to use and great for trips in the car. You certaintly don't hear, "Are we there yet?"

I myself own a pink one, a gift from my husband. I also enjoy the Pokemon versions of games. However, Nintendo does an assorted array of video games for a slew of interests…

CES Communications Round-Up Part 3: Minoru

To close out our conversation on CES communications news we take a look at three more companies innovating in this space. While we are on the topic of video telephony and webcams we can’t forget to touch on one of the major trends coming out of the show—3-D.

What? Put on those silly glasses? Watch blotchy, nauseating, red and green video? Are we bringing back “Creature Double Feature?” Well… yes, no, and no.

3-D has come a long way… Continue

Family Friendly Technology Needs-My Two Cents

On the note of family freindly technology, I would like the following wish list:

1-The ability to read my childrens cell phone text messages and be emailed or text'd when a x rated word is used.

Accidentally, I found some poor unforunate girl's texts to my son that showed her efforts to enlighten my son on things of the sexual matter. He said she was this "nasty" girl who won't stop texting him and he ignores her. I had to send her a text asking her to leave my son alone… Continue

Brick-n-Mortar Shoppers: Don't Leave Home Without Your Smartphone!

There now are location-based and entertainment smartphone applications coming online that are targeted more so for Moms and Dads who already have upgraded or may upgrade to the various brands of smartphones out there. The apps are also mostly about how Mom and Dad may spend their time outside of work, and especially in support of their time at their favorite mall. The apps are for both shopping efficiency and shopping downtime. You see, “Location-Based Advertising” may… Continue

Next-Generation TV: What Do Consumers Know, Understand and Care About?

Has anyone been asking any family members or friends if they’ve gotten their IPTV or OTT Video service yet? If you or they have AT&T U-Verse or Verizon FiOS TV services, do you or they know or care that AT&T is a pure IPTV service, or that Verizon is a hybrid Cable/IP TV service – and what the differences are and mean for you as a subscriber? Do you or they know that the way your channel programming is delivered, in a linear fashion, is… Continue

I'm sure almost everyone who owns a television has heard of HDTV. I am here to tell you all that if you watch television on a frequent basis and are trying to decide to get an upgrade on your television, DO IT. I recently bought my first HDTV, a new HD cable box, and a new HDMI cord to connect the cable box to the television. I watched the Super Bowl on this TV and decided I could never watch another football game on a normal TV again. The picture on my HDTV is incredible; crystal clear.

I… Continue
