When the IPod Doesn’t Cut It: Sansa Players

For those of you like me who see past the jazzy infomercials, the bright colors, and the draw of following the herds, there is the question of what mp3 player to choose when the IPod isn’t your automatic default. I admit, I was once delighted to unwrap my own IPod mini for Christmas – it was small, shiny and matched my favorite gym outfit. Then, I went to upload music. As most of us know, ITunes charges a hefty $0.99 per song. For any avid music lover, or long distant runner who requires a… Continue

Vizio Continues to Exceed Expectations with Unlikely Success Story

It’s a familiar story. American companies outsourcing to companies in Asia that can produce quality products at lower cost. And not just outsourcing manufacturing and the jobs that go with it, but outsourcing innovation and entire product categories to foreign vendors.

So the Vizio story is quite amazing. The young Irvine, CA company, which only began ramping its operations five years ago, took over… Continue

Samsung LED HDTVs Merge Power and Supreme Beauty (and you thought your wallet was safe)

Samsung LED HDTV 8000 Series

As I sat in Samsung’s press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. A senior executive was speaking on a stage over 100 feet away from me. The room was packed with hundreds of people. Like lemmings, all we press and analyst types had stood in line for 45 minutes for this honor. It felt a little like a James Bond film. You know the one. It is the usual… Continue

LG is looking to get a jump on the competition and plans to release a smartphone with a flexible screen later this year. Google Reader dies in two weeks – here are all the best alternatives

Google has shown that it most certainly isn’t afraid to pull the plug on services that aren’t making money. More than one out of every three Google products ends up being shuttered, and the company’s popular Google Reader RSS reader will be added to the list of dearly departed Google services in less than two weeks. Now that we have all had some time to get the panic and despair out of our systems, the rebuilding process can begin. There are plenty of options out there when it comes to finding a solid service to replace Google Reader, and it can get overwhelming. As such, we’ve narrowed it down to our five favorites and here they are in no particular order: NewsBlur

Verizon accused of throttling Netflix traffic

Verizon seems to have found itself in a fresh net neutrality controversy. GigaOM reported earlier this week that bandwidth provider Cogent Communications accused Verizon of “allowing the peer connections” between the two companies “to degrade,” which results in slower wireline traffic for end users. Cogent CEO Dave Schaffer told GigaOM that Verizon says that it’s not adding more ports to its peer connections with Cogent because it’s moving traffic for an unspecified video provider that Schaffer believes to be Netflix. “Over the past year Netflix has become a big partner for us,” he said. “This is a business model problem, not an engineering problem.” Network World’s Colin Neagle, meanwhile, notes that some Verizon wireline users have been complaining about the quality of their Netflix streams

Video: iOS 7 running on an iPad

Apple was in such a rush to get the first beta of its iOS 7 software ready for WWDC that it didn’t even have time to finish the iPad build. That seemingly wasn’t enough to stop some developers from giving us a look at a the software formatted for the iPad, but now it appears as though a tablet-optimized version of iOS 7 has been captured on video. A Russian YouTube user on Tuesday posted a video of what he claims to be iOS 7 running on Apple’s iPad, and it looks like the real deal. Nothing is certain, of course, but 9to5Mac says that “based on the user-interface elements of previous versions of iOS for the iPad, the video does look
