As a father of three I have assumed many roles, one of them is ‘IT Dad’. While supporting an average of five computers on the wireless home network I have developed a keen sense for when things are going well, …or not. I have learned that there is an unmistakable sound that almost always coincides with a computer or network problem. It sounds something like this, “Daaaaaad, something is wrong with my stupid computer”.
This is when the troubleshooting and interrogation commence. I ask the usual basic questions about which sites they have been to, what was downloaded, did any friends use your computer, did you click on any email attachments, etc.
IT Dads like me now have better home network diagnostic tools than they used to. The home network is beginning to get some of the features of corporate IT networks, namely centralized management. These features will be popular with IT Dads for the same reason that they have succeeded in corporate networks – they save time.
Pure Networks Speed Meter Pro is one example of a software product that provides a network wide view of certain health and performance statistics across the entire home network. This is cool because without leaving your desk you can see problems, which affect the performance of your network, as they occur. For example, you will be alerted when the CPU utilization of one of the computers on your network is too high as well as which application is causing it. Often times IT Dad will know that there is a problem before anyone else on the network notices. From IT Dads computer you can also see specific problems with your ISP’s network. When your ISP is bogged down and their DNS servers cannot keep up with all of the traffic from your neighborhood your family will surely notice the slow response times and occasional page timeouts. This software will point out the upstream problem and save you the time of needless troubleshooting. Pure Speed Meter Pro is a good compliment to your wireless home network because it can take a lot less time and guess work out of satisfying those demanding customers that you have at home.
Pure Networks was acquired by and has been part of
Cisco since August 2008.
