USGBC Annually Convenes More than 25,000 at Greenbuild

July 30, 2009 (Washington, DC) – The U.S. Green Building Council today announced that a performance by environmental advocate and nine-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow will help open its Greenbuild 2009 Conference, the world’s premier forum on sustainable buildings and communities.

The Greenbuild International Conference & Expo is being held November 11 to 13, 2009 in Phoenix, Arizona. More than 25,000 people attend Greenbuild every year, and its increasing profile and size led the USGBC to open this year’s event at Chase Field, home to Major League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks. The Nov. 11th opening evening will feature presentations and a keynote address, in addition to Crow’s performance.

“Beyond her music, Sheryl Crow’s informed and effective advocacy made her the natural choice to help us open Greenbuild in a new and powerful way,” said Rick Fedrizzi, USGBC President, CEO & Founding Chair. “More than 25,000 people gather every year at Greenbuild because we know that the building industry can play a major role in reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy independence and economic growth.”

“Performing at Greenbuild is like being on the international stage of the green movement, celebrating with you the progress we’re making on this important issue,” Crow said.

A graduate of the University of Missouri, Crow also holds honorary degrees from Temple University and Southeast Missouri University. Crow has been on the leading edge in urging the adoption of efficient technologies like CFLs and biofuels, and has effectively harnessed the grassroots, the media, Fortune 500 companies, and government to build support for environmental protection. Before finding success as a musician, Crow was an elementary school teacher; she recently worked alongside First Lady Michelle Obama in an effort to encourage public school students to achieve.

Greenbuild is the largest gathering of representatives from all sectors of the green building movement. Three days of extensive educational programming, workshops, a vast exhibition floor and ample networking events provide unrivaled opportunities to learn about the latest technological innovations, explore new products, and exchange ideas with other professionals. Greenbuild is the three time recipient of IMEX Green Meetings Award.

In addition to an impressive collection of master speakers, Greenbuild 2009 will also feature more than 100 educational sessions, LEED and Education Provider workshops, off-site educational sessions, a two day Residential Summit, and tours of local green building sites throughout the Arizona area. More than 1,700 exhibitors will showcase some of the leading technologies and products in green design, construction and operations.

Last year’s Greenbuild, held in Boston, drew more than 28,000 attendees and featured more than 800 exhibit booths. Past Greenbuild keynote speakers have included President Bill Clinton, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, E.O. Wilson, Van Jones, William McDonough and Paul Hawken.

About USGBC The U.S. Green Building Council is committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings. With a community comprising 78 local affiliates, more than 20,000 member companies and organizations, and more than 131,000 LEED Accredited Professionals, USGBC is the driving force of an industry that is projected to soar to $60 billion by 2010. The USGBC leads an unlikely diverse constituency of builders and environmentalists, corporations and nonprofit organizations, elected officials and concerned citizens, and teachers and students.

Buildings in the United States are responsible for 39 percent of CO2 emissions, 40 percent of energy consumption, 13 percent water consumption and 15 percent of GDP per year, making green building a source of significant economic and environmental opportunity. Greater building efficiency can meet 85 percent of future U.S. demand for energy, and a national commitment to green building has the potential to generate 2.5 million American jobs.

Don’t close the door on brick-and-mortar stores just yet

You know what the hardest part about shopping is? Getting in the store. Spending money, even if you don’t have a lot of it, is crazy easy. Giving me even the slightest push to purchase a product, like offering a 10 percent off coupon, which barely even covers the sales tax, is often all it takes to get me to go from red to green on a purchasing decision. I recently pre-ordered NCAA Football 2013 at an online retailer just because they were offering a deal to get the game for $15 off retail, even though if I waited and bought it used in six months, it’d probably be even cheaper than that. ...

SNB considers capital controls if euro falls apart

A safety construction sign stands outside the Swiss National Bank building in Bern ZURICH (Reuters) - Switzerland is drawing up plans for emergency measures including capital controls in case the euro collapses although it does not expect to need them and will continue to defend a cap on the franc in the meantime, the head of the central bank said. "We must be prepared just in case the currency union collapses, although I don't expect that," Swiss National Bank President Thomas Jordan, who predicted the euro zone crisis in his 1994 doctoral thesis, told the SonntagsZeitung newspaper. ...

Samsung Galaxy S III shines as this year’s biggest Android launch

It’s no shocker the Samsung Galaxy S III launch has been the talk of the town this week. Officially hitting stores May 29th, device pre-orders have taken off on Amazon and other retailers. The arrival of the Galaxy S III may have deterred other manufacturers from launching smartphones this week, but the Android PC market is still heating up. VIA has unveiled the APC 8750 with a low price to match its small stature. Even tinier is the MK802 from Rikomagic: a $74 computer hardly bigger than a thumbdrive.
