Technology meets people.

The Honeymoon is Over. Time to Look at Our Relationship with the Apple iPhone 3Gs

Let’s face it, us technology people are a somewhat fickle bunch. We “oooh” and “aaaah” over our shiny new toys. We treat them better than most of our extended family. And then the moment a shinier newer toy is available, we grab it and then the cycle starts all over again.

Such is the case with our iPhone. We traded in that Edge model for the sexier new 3G. Once we grew tired of our slimmer & sexier phone, we were treated to the 3Gs. Well, now that the 3Gs honeymoon is over, it’s time to evaluate the relationship.

So, here we go. A look at three things - a feature I love, one I hate, and one I want in the next generation.

WHAT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE

The video camera. It is fantastic. The ability to quickly edit video in device, enjoy the playback on a screen that’s a pleasure to watch, and then immediately upload to YouTube or share via email is very cool. Beyond cool. It’s just freakin’ awesome.

Yes, Mr. My Smartphone Already Had a Video Camera, it took awhile for iPhone lovers to have video. But, you know what, the wait was worth it. My video camera is better than yours in every single way. My interface is better, picture quality is better, and the entire user experience blows yours away.

WHAT I ABSOLUTELY HATE

I can’t completely fault Apple for this issue. BUT (that’s a big but) I am trying to envision a scenario where the entire 800 pound AppleGorilla couldn’t bring AT&T to a place where users could enjoy full SMS capability on launch day...and, well...I just can’t do it.

Also every fiber of my being despises knowing that my iPhone 3Gs supports tethering yet I cannot utilize this feature in a Wi-Fi dead zone.

I hate having features that I have paid for (and, trust me, there is a cost associated with every feature, function, button, and whistle in every single product you ever buy) not available to me.

WHAT I ABSOLUTELY WANT IN THE NEXT GENERATION...A LIST BECAUSE I COULDN’T PICK JUST ONE

HD quality video
Multiple email support
Application toggling
An integrated GPS with TTS (Text to Speech)

The micro blogging site, which transmits some 400 million messages a day, said on Wednesday that it had begun rolling out an optional "login verification" service to thwart hackers seeking to hijack accounts with stolen passwords. ...

China's Lenovo buys and diversifies to outshine PC rivals

Customers talk to a salesperson about a new laptop at a Lenovo shop in Shanghai By Lee Chyen Yee and Umesh Desai HONG KONG (Reuters) - Lenovo Group Ltd's bold acquisitions in its flagship PC business, a foray into mobile gadgets, and a relatively light debt load are setting it apart from PC rivals as industry shipments take their steepest fall in decades. Lenovo, a sliver away from unseating Hewlett-Packard Co as the world's top PC maker by shipments, is expected on Thursday to post a two-thirds rise in quarterly profit, its fastest in 1-1/2 years, according to analysts' estimates. ...

Wireless carriers raise alarms by selling private customer data to marketers

Wireless carriers’ data collection and selling practices are increasingly setting off alarm bells among privacy advocates, The Wall Street Journal reports. In particular, the Journal notes that there’s heightened anxiety about Verizon’s Precision Market Insights product that collects, stores and sells information about users’ web browsing habits, their locations and their demographic backgrounds. Verizon insists that it’s anonymizing the data it shows to third parties and is only selling data on large groups of customers broken down by geography and other demographics. The carrier also says that it has always collected this sort of data and has always been willing to hand it over to law enforcement officials if compelled by a search warrant. All the same, the Journal’s report raises

How to Stop Worrying and Love Twitter's New Two-Factor Verification

Twitter has added two-step verification to increase its security after all the recent hacks into high profile media accounts, but you should go sign up for it right this minute — because everyone's vulnerable to password attacks these days. Or maybe not right this minute, since there are some reports that Twitter is a little overwhelmed and others have reported the two steps aren't showing up for everyone. But at some point in the very near future, you get on that. Here's why, even if the new cellphone hiccup seems cumbersome.

A Hewlett-Packard logo is seen at the company's Executive Briefing Center in Palo Alto By Poornima Gupta SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Hewlett-Packard Co raised its 2013 earnings outlook after beating low expectations, as CEO Meg Whitman's turnaround plan helped to shore up profits and offset shrinking personal computer sales with enterprise computing services. While fiscal second-quarter profit plummeted 32 percent, Wall Street had braced for worse. HP shares gained 14 percent after the company projected full-year earnings per share of $3.50 to $3.60, raising the lower end by 10 cents. ...

iPad App Video Review: Frozen Synapse

Developed by Mode 7, this is like a smaller scale and more action oriented take on Diplomacy. You and your opponent actually put all your units moves in during the planning phase, only to watch the outcome in the action phase. The game is all about covering your bases and trying to anticipate your opponents moves by setting ambushes, destroying cover, and just making sure you're aiming in the right direction to engage. The game is pretty complex, but also simple to get into. There are about ten minutes worth of tutorial videos to prep you before you take on a real opponent.
