T-Mobile Planning to Launch Herd of Google Android-Based Devices for the Home - Who Cares?

I came across an article by Ashlee Vance in the New York Times this morning, T-Mobile to Use Google Software in Devices for Home. I've enjoyed reading Ms. Vance's articles and thought this would would be of interest to you as well.

While it is interesting that T-Mobile is hoping to heard a group of intelligent, network connected devices into your home, do you really care whether the operating system is Google's Android (a Linux-based operating system)? I would bet that most of you would be more interested in things such as:

  • What does it do for me?
  • How much will is cost?
  • What is the price of the networking/communications/data service?
  • What applications are available?
  • What do the applications cost?
  • What are the terms and conditions of the networking/communications/data service for the device?

In my analysis, the device is only as good as the networking/communications/data service. I've had very high end devices perform very poorly because of network issues while someone else was having a very good experience with a lower end device that had a better network connection.

What's your view?
