Answer: a hilarious night of fun! Having met with over 40 companies at CES last week, it was certainly mostly work for me in Vegas. But as they say, "no work and no play..." and "laughter is the best medicine."
The Set-Up
TigerDirect.com and CompUSA were sponsoring the 12th Annual 2009 Consumer Electronics Show "Build Your Own PC Race for Charity" at the Wynn Las Vegas Resort. This year, the race determined who could assemble a computer based on the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core Dragon processor in the least amount of time. There were about 600 people in the room to cheer on 30 geeks that came mostly from the gadget press corp and blogosphere.
Why Cheerleaders?
Why not? Geeks are people too. And it takes a lot of training for cheerleaders to do those formations. Did you know that cheerleading is the most denagerous of sports, more so than football and hockey (OK, so sometimes those pyramids come crashing down).
The Winner
With a time of 5:59 (I couldn't beleive it, this blows away last year's time), Al Hernandez, Technology & Consumer Reporter at Fox Morning News, won the competition. His charity, Challenged Athletes Foundation, gets his $10,000 prize winnings along with the computer he built. The Challenged Athletes Foundation helps people with physical disabilities hold a more active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive athletics.
"I am thrilled that I was able to pull off the win this year,” said Al Hernandez. “The world class technology editors from Yahoo! Tech, Slash Gear and G4 really made it tough. The money tonight will benefit Challenged Athletes for years to come, thank you to Tiger Direct and all the sponsors for helping change so many lives."
In second place, only 3 seconds behind the winner, was Chris Ramseyer of Tweak Town and third place with a build time of 6:21 was Greg Morgan of The Tech Zone.
Since the annual event began 12 years ago, it has been responsible for donating over $2 million to charities around the country.
Needless to say, I won't be entering the competition next year, unless I want to make a humorous point about how Trender Research is focused on everyday people. I could build a huge Jenga tower with the parts... err, maybe not.
